Three alarming reports on sleep crossed our desk this week. First came news about a possible link between rotating-shift work and prostate cancer risk, in the American Journal of Epidemiology. In a big survey of Japanese men, researchers found that those who worked on a sleep-disrupting rotating shift were four times more likely to develop prostate cancer than men who worked regular night or day shifts. Report No. 2 suggests that poor sleep habits could contribute to worse blood sugar control in African Americans with type 2 diabetes. This one appeared in Archives of Internal Medicine. | | | Health insurance is key to labor negotiations / Many experts argue that the problem cannot be resolved at the | | Posted Sunday, September 03, 2006 11:17:09 PM by Blog57 Team | | In an admittedly unscientific but telling telephone survey, Ken Jacobs, chairman of the Center for Labor Research and Education at UC Berkeley, asked 21 union leaders representing 315,000 workers in California this summer whether health care would be a central issue in their contract negotiations. All 21 said it would. "That is not a shock,'' Jacobs said, because runaway increases in health insurance costs have been the dominating theme in collective bargaining in recent years. The thorny issue is not going away. Asked Jacobs: "Who is going to pay for it?'' Employer-sponsored health insurance has protected Americans since the end of World War II. But much is changing. In a study set for release today, Jacobs cites federal data that show the proportion of workers covered by employer-sponsored health coverage has fallen by almost five percentage points in both the United States and California since 2001.... | |

| | | California looks to copy Canada's health-care system | | Posted Thursday, August 31, 2006 5:34:01 PM by Blog57 Team | | OTTAWA - California legislators are poised to vote for a "Canadian-style" health-care system this week, in a bill that would outlaw private care throughout the state. Senate Bill 840, which is widely expected to pass final reading, would provide free medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage to all California residents through a state-run agency. Canada has been front and centre in the vitriolic debate sparked by the bill, which must be approved by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to become law. "We've learned from the Canadian system and integrated it into a plan specifically for California," said Sara Rogers, a spokeswoman for Senator Sheila Kuehl, who put forward the bill. "A universal health-care plan is the only way California can solve its health-care problems," she added, noting that more than six million Californians have no health insurance.... | |
