Inquiry concludes Diana's death an accident
Posted Thursday, December 28, 2006 1:17:07 PM by Blog57 Team
ELIZABETH JACKSON: This week a 3 year $10 million inquiry into the death of Princess Diana concluded that the Paris crash in which she died was a tragic accident. The findings dismissed the conspiracy theories that claim the Princess was killed by the British establishment and the intelligence services. Prince William and his brother Harry hope the speculation about her death will now end and they're apparently upset at the role played by the photographers who were pursuing their mother's car. Robert Jobson is the Royal Correspondent for the London Evening Standard and he's also written a book about Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton. He told our reporter in London, Stephanie Kennedy, there are lessons from Princess Diana's death for her sons and he doesn't think the speculation about her death will end....

These Days

When I was a kid on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Halloween was uneventful. I was always a pirate: Black pants, black shirt, bandanna, an eye patch. My brother and I took the service elevator to the penthouse, and made our way down the back stairs, ringing doorbells, shouting "trick or treat," our shopping bags filled by the time we got home. The night was gloriously independent: Our mother didn't worry about us in the doorman apartment building. Stairwell landings were the perfect places to sneak a Baby Ruth or even better, caramels that typically we weren't permitted to have since they could ruin our teeth. We were savvy: We didn't indulge in anything unwrapped and knew all about the razor-blades-in-apples scam that started about that time. When I got to college, I dressed as a lady of the night, which was really just a slight variation on the pirate theme without the eye patch, although my costume was a little clingier....

Tiers of joy: Wedding cakes make statement

Huyen Tranberg sat at the small table, plastic fork poised over the tableaux of thinly sliced cake layers. Her sister, Stephanie Waite, and niece, Amanda Waite, quietly nibbled away. This was the moment of decision for Tranberg's July wedding reception. Not the raspberry filling; allergies were an issue. Nor the carrot cake; too sweet for their taste. But the chocolate .Ê.Ê. now that was a winner. ''We're looking for something simple but nice,'' explained Stephanie Waite as they pointed out their choice on a display wall: an elegant three-tiered square cake with a smooth frosting finish. David Mess knows the scenario. Since 1989, when he opened Buttercream Collection in St. Paul, Minn., he's offered advice to nervous brides, excited mothers and the occasional ("What's wrong with plain white cake?") grandmother....

I Like to Watch: Oh, how beautifully "Battleship Galactica" wallows in the hopelessness of the human plight. And let us

There's a lot going on in the world and in all of our lives right now, chickens, but let's all make sure to focus on what's really important: Television. Now is not the time to get distracted by raging wildfires or wars abroad or big events in our lives, because there is a veritable cornucopia of televised delights, fresh and ready for our idle sampling, just a few clicks of the remote away. Take it from me, a woman who has recently told by her doctor that she could be bringing forth a child any day now: Even when major life events are looming -- especially when major life events are looming -- that's when TV matters the most. Sure, I could be pacing nervously around the house, reading up on breastfeeding techniques, putting the crib together or trying to prepare myself for the fact that my life is about to become hectic and exhausting, either in weeks or days or minutes, depending on the whims of my internal Easy-Bake Oven....

Last week I was out with some friends and, as usual, the conversation turned toward sex. The topic was my recent column on redheads. One of my friends said, "It doesn’t have so much to do with hair color as it has to do with neuroses. The best sex I’ve had involved women with neuroses." I thought about this for a couple of days. My life has been pretty tame lately. No intense conflicts or wild dramas. I should be having cum loads of amazing sex, right? But, suffice it to say, I tend to have more and better sex in the throes of psychological conflict and emotional instability. That doesn’t mean peace of mind makes me boring in bed. There just seems to be a strong correlation between mind-blowing sex and an imbalanced mind. Sex is a prism reflecting the spectrum of our inner lives....

Just my luck: Two outstanding productions

You know, I've always felt lucky. I don't mean the kind of luck where you win stuff all the time -- my sister-in-law Jackie has that.I've been lucky about the important things in life -- a good marriage, kids, and now an empty nest; a job I love; two darling granddaughters; a very pushy Siamese cat; and, I've still got my parents. This week, however, fate gave me the proverbial wake-up call, with an emergency room visit followed by surgery. As I'm home recuperating, I know I'm lucky, it could have been so much worse.I didn't know quite what to expect when I went to see "Triumph of Love" at the Towle Community Theatre. An adaptation of a Marivaux comedy, "Triumph" is subtler than a farce but utilizes traditional farce tools such as mistaken identities, cross-dressing, and double entendres....

Statement withdrawn in brother-stabbing case

THE possibility that a man who stabbed his brother in the street might not be prosecuted has outraged a witness to the violent incident. A knife was plunged into the chest of a 21-year-old in Station Road, Sawbridgeworth, on a Sunday evening in July, leaving him with blood pouring down his shirt. This week, Herts police indicated the victim was retracting his statement and it would be down to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) whether to pursue a charge. The police spokeswoman said: "The CPS will decide if an independent prosecution is brought, whether it meets the criteria to go to court." It is understood that the lack of direct evidence from a victim does affect the quality of a prosecution. But Paul Newman, who witnessed the July 23 attack with his wife, Stephanie, believes that action should be taken....

Magicians gathering in the city

For their next trick, the Palmerston North Magic Circle will make up to 120 top magicians appear simultaneously in the Speirs Centre at Labour Weekend. The occasion will be New Zealand's 28th International Magic Convention, which the city is hosting for the first time since 1982. "It will be a great occasion," Circle president Peter Thomson said yesterday. Besides national talent, several of the world's best magicians will be present to lecture and perform. Many of the sessions will be closed to the public during competitions, lectures and master classes, but two public shows will be held on the afternoons of Sunday, October 22, and Labour Day, Monday October 23. "In recent years, many of the conventions have been held in the Auckland area," he said....
