LOS ANGELES A U-C-L-A chemistry professor is going to be knighted by the queen of England. Fraser Stoddart, a world-renowned expert in molecular nanotechnology, says the honor would allow him to be more influential in his field. Stoddart, who is Scottish and moved to U-C-L-A in 1997, says he would prefer that no one in the U-S address him as "Sir." "I embrace the informality of American, and particularly California, culture," says Stoddart. Copyright 2006 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth, suffering from a back injury, cancelled her second engagement in 24 hours on Friday, pulling out of an appearance at a charity horse racing event. She was, however, still planning to attend a lunch at Newmarket race course in eastern England on Friday, a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said. "She was due to go to Newmarket to go to a lunch and a charity racing day. The queen won't be watching the racing but she will be attending the lunch," the spokeswoman said. On Thursday the 80-year-old monarch cancelled a visit to open Arsenal Football Club's new stadium in north London because of a pulled muscle in her back. The palace has said there is "no cause for concern" but doctors have advised her to rest, as the injury she suffered at her Balmoral residence in Scotland has not eased after two weeks of busy engagements....

TALLINN: Thousands of people packed into Tallinn's medieval City Hall Square yesterday to give Britain's Queen Elizabeth II a musical send-off from the Baltic states. When the 80-year-old monarch arrived in the cobbled square at 11am, it was teeming with people eager to meet her during one of her popular walkabouts, where she mingles with ordinary citizens, before an open-air choral concert called 'Estonia Sings'. Dozens of people had a chance to hand her flowers or small pictures they had painted for the occasion, including 12-year-old Heidi Tiik. "I was able to present a small picture of a sunset at the seaside to the queen," Heidi said proudly. "I like drawing and I'm so happy the queen now has my picture." The queen, wearing a pale pink coat and matching hat, listened attentively afterwards as the music of the choral concert washed over a sea of several thousand people waving the Union Jack and Estonian tricolour flags....

Elizabeth III

LOS ANGELES Kicking off his sandals, Stephen Frears looks as comfortable as a naughty tabby stretched across the plump pillows at his five-star hotel. The British director of the very British film "The Queen" has a spot of advice for a reporter's imminent luncheon with Dame Helen Mirren, the new movie's star. "I have heard that men become tongue-tied in her presence," he says, giving his foot a nice long scratch. "I have heard that they act like idiots." Frears arches a meaningful eyebrow. That is the perception, is it not? That Helen Mirren can be intimidating. That there is something regal, and still smoldering, about the graduate of the Royal Shakespeare Company whom the British press very long ago dubbed "The Sex Queen of Stratford" for her spanking hot turns as Lady Macbeth and Cleopatra at the Old Vic....

DAME HELEN MIRREN fears QUEEN ELIZABETH II will never speak to her again after portraying her in the critically acclaimed new movie THE QUEEN. The 60-year-old star has been receiving rave reviews for her role as the British monarch and recently picked up the Best Actress honours at the Venice Film Festival. Mirren says she is apprehensive about encountering Queen Elizabeth saying, "I think she'll carefully never meet me. I would hate for someone to play me on the screen." The PRIME SUSPECT star did meet the Queen five years ago at a polo match and was struck by how "very, very sparkly" she was. Mirren claims the most challenging aspect of the role was recreating the Queen's voice and awkward stride. She adds, "I was so nervous about (the voice). It's so recognisable. As a young girl, she was very light and quite graceful, except for this funny walk she's got....

Final design selection for memorial to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother
Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 3:07:29 AM by Blog57 Team
Donald Buttress and Donald Insall Associates, together with sculptors Philip Jackson and Paul Day, have been selected to work in collaboration on the final design for the memorial to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Five short-listed designers submitted detailed proposals in June this year. All five suggested that a statue of Queen Elizabeth should be placed adjacent to the existing statue of George VI by William MacMillan. The selection panel, chaired by The Prince of Wales, decided that the Donald Buttress proposal to modify the setting was the best fit with the existing Louis de Soissons scheme of 1954-5. Elements from the Donald Insall design were also chosen, including the proposal of a statue of The Queen Mother by Philip Jackson and relief panels by Paul Day. The selection panel has therefore invited Donald Buttress to work together with Donald Insall to provide an architectural setting suitable for the sculpture....

AN acute shortage of beds in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital¿s psychiatric unit has forced up to 10 mentally ill patients a day to be cared for in its emergency ward, a senior psychiatrist told a court today. An inquest into the deaths of David Gerard, 56, and Michael Eldridge, 55, who were both killed by people who had recently been released from mental health facilities continued today. In April, 2003, Mr Eldridge was stabbed multiple times by Barry John Simper, who had been released from the mental health facility at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital just six days earlier. Psychiatrist William Goh – who examined Simper just days before his release – told the Coroner’s Court that there was always pressure on staff to make beds in the psychiatric ward available....
