| World news headline bloops | | Posted Thursday, February 09, 2006 10:47:40 AM by Rose Martins | World news is usually accurate but occassionally there are bloops.
Even the greatest names in news broadcasting agencies, such as CNN and BBC, have had their fair share of bloopers. And it's not just TV news casts that are suseptable. Printed and online newspapers are full of the funniest headline errors that result in a couple of chuckles. Some news articles are dedicated to instances of misused words, typographical errors or strange turns of phrase provoke chuckles.
Newpaper reporters and editors of world news spend considerable amount of time and energy getting things right. But under pressure to meet extremely tight deadlines, the writers can, and often do, mess up their stories with hysterically funny headlines.
The problem arises when the nature of the article is serious, like coverage of the war in Iraq, and the headline of the world news story, is humorously inappropriate.
A recent news article printed about the Catholic Christian Church offended some readers. The reason? The error in the news article headline. The offended parties found the error to be anything but funny.

| | | Column: Negative campaigning highlights need for more 'good news' in world | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 3:29:02 AM by Blog57 Team | | I don't know about you, but I am glad this election is over. It got to the point in the last few weeks I didn't even care who won anymore. I just wanted the robo-calls, the television ads and the plethora of negative fliers to stop invading my world. Monday alone, the phone rang six straight times with recordings meant to scare me into voting for one candidate or another. Usually I run to pick up the phone. Last week I started screening calls for the first time in my life. That's not to say I didn't care about the election. I want to know where our leaders stand on the important issues that face my family and our nation. I guess I was most disappointed because I kept waiting for one candidate to bowl me over and share their vision of what the future might look like. I was waiting for someone to step up, like JFK did, and invite us into a future we could build together.... | |

| | | Boxing - News & Results - World News | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 7:05:13 PM by Blog57 Team | | By Clive Benrath: Evans/Waterman and World Sports Promotion stage their third professional boxing show at the Salle des étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco on Saturday (Nov 4) night when undefeated heavyweight prospect Roman Greenberg makes the first defence of his IBO Intercontinental heavyweight title against Russian Alexei Varakin. Bringing top class professional boxing to the millionaire's playground of Monte Carlo does not come cheap and without the help of SBM(Socièté des Bains de Mer, Hôtels Casinos and Resorts)it may not have been possible to promote boxing in the principality. I'm told that the support by SBM has been nothing short of phenomenal and without them it would be impossible to stage the eight fight card. The future certainly looks bright for the sport of boxing to be showcased in such a wonderful resort as Monte Carlo.... | |

| | | NBA's new theme: We are the world | | Posted Sunday, October 15, 2006 1:03:49 PM by Blog57 Team | | When the final buzzer sounds after Thursday's exhibition between the Toronto Raptors and Maccabi Elite, the NBA will have wrapped up the international part of its most ambitious preseason ever. Four teams held training camp overseas this year while playing in five European countries. Clubs from Turkey and Israel will cross 10 time zones for games in the United States. The Warriors and Denver Nuggets headed south of the border this weekend for an exhibition in Monterrey, Mexico. The NBA has never been more popular abroad and its association with the Euroleague never tighter. Before a Philadelphia 76ers game against FC Barcelona in Spain earlier this month, Commissioner David Stern listened to a pitch for a five-team European division of the NBA. And though he maintains that such an expansion is unlikely, Warriors forward Mickael Pietrus is salivating over just the possibility.... | |

| | | Despite our fears, the world has reasons to be optimistic | | Posted Saturday, September 09, 2006 5:20:53 AM by Blog57 Team | | THIS week, television screens have been filled once again with the images of the assault on the twin towers on September 11, 2001. In a dogged attempt at an upbeat tone, the reports have homed in on the tiny band of survivors, spiralling their way down the internal staircases as the towers burnt their way towards collapse: small tales of bravery that only demonstrate how survival was entirely down to chance. .... | |

| | | Boxing - News & Results - USA News | | Posted Friday, September 01, 2006 3:20:52 PM by Blog57 Team | | By Jerry Glick in New York: Don King held a press conference on Wednesday at The Firebird Russian Restaurant on New York City's west side. The subject? Only the biggest news in boxing today, Nicolay "The Beast from the East" Valuev, WBA Heavyweight Champion of the World. Some of the first words that Valuev has learned in English are, of course, King's favorite phrase; "Only in America." King was his usual vociferous self. Somehow no matter how the "World's Greatest Promoter" says things in his own way he is understood. At times he even appeared to be laughing good heartedly at his own trips of fancy with the "Kings" English. A King press conference is like no other. Part circus, part serious, even, at times, mean spirited in the way he makes reference to business competitors. But always (well, almost always) that broad toothy smile; one that seems out of place on a 75 year old face.... | |

| | | China's per capita milk consumption one-fifth of world average | | Posted Tuesday, August 29, 2006 5:03:37 AM by Blog57 Team | | Beijing, Aug 29. (PTI): China's per capita milk consumption is only 21.7 litres or a fifth of the world average, resulting in slower growth of babies above one year old, the state media reported. "Chinese babies up to 12 months old are the same as Western babies in terms of health, but grow slower thereafter, especially during adolescence," a survey by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture showed. Many Chinese consider milk as a breastfeeding supplement for babies and adults regard drinking milk as childish, ignoring its nutritional value, the 'People's Daily' reported. Chinese experts have urged the public to "drink milk for a lifetime", saying the World Trade Organisation measured a country's living standard by per capita milk consumption. "Dairy foods, like breast milk, are nutritionally rich and have various vitamins that can be easily absorbed," the newspaper quoted an expert as saying.... | |
